Buoyed by the smartest marketing campaign this year, lofty production values and porn's reigning superstar, Jenna Jameson, looking sexy in and out of her fireman's outfit, Flashpoint delivers on all levels. It's a big video, with a big budget, big sex scenes and big ambitions
To enjoy the story, one must like soap operas. This particular soap opera has dead firemen, funerals, failed relationships, an arsonist, drownings, suicides, cars blowing up, an ax fight, and a huge fire scene at the end. It also boasts seven very good sex scenes starring some of the top male and female talent the adult business has to offer.
Jenna plays a firefighter tormented by her ex-boyfriend, who is himself the subject of an arson investigation. As the best-looking group of firefighters ever assembled goes on life-saving missions, the participants engage in an array of sexual antics that don't detract from the story.
Jameson appears in three scenes: an interesting fire and leather fantasy segment with T.T. Boy, a scalding bathroom lesbian scene with Brittany Andrews and a nice opener with Mickey G. where she deep throats him before banging him.
The scenes that deserve pre-noms for Best of the Year include an extremely well-shot orgy scene in and around a fire truck with Jill Kelly, Sindee Coxx, Johnni Black and others; an intense three-way with Johnni Black (who swallows cock whole), Steve Drake and Jill Kelly which includes the anal plowing of Ms. Black; and Missy walking into the station to use the phone, then seducing, fucking and videotaping Jonathan Morgan. A funny reference to Shane's escapades with a fireman adds a knowing touch here.
Flashpoint looks great, with solid acting performances by Jenna (a definite pre-nominee for Best Actress), Steve Drake and Mickey G. (Supporting Actor), Jill Kelly (Supporting Actress) and just about everyone else in the cast. The art direction, videography, are top-notch, as is Brad Armstrong's direction. Only the sappy, overly dramatic music during early expository scenes detracts from the show (as does some of the intrusive rock music during a couple of the early sex scenes). Otherwise, Flashpoint is one of the best adult videos to appear this year, and a sure-fire hit. Retailers will want to stock extra copies, especially stores where Jenna Jameson product has previously done well.
Anybody who doesn't know Flashpoint is commended to the January 1998 issue which had a two-page On The Set cover story and the May 1998 issue where it received an AAAAA Editor's Choice review written by Paul Fishbein His Own Self.
The DVD is even better than the video. Jack Remy's razor-sharp videography is matched by a secondary audio track where Brad Armstrong gives his reactions and reflections on Flashpoint as it unreels. Other extras include bios of the stars voice-overed by Wicked woman Joy King and a photo gallery and trailer collection. There is also a 35-minute 16mm making-of documentary, but the muddy picture on the doc cost the disc a half-A on the Quality ranking.
Well done. And until Jenna's new all-girl film Hell on Heels comes out, it's the most recent Jenna title. Stock deep, and often.
