Promoted as "the finest documentary ever on the subject," Lavender Limelight: Lesbians In Film is an exploration of lesbian filmmakers and their views of sexual identity, growing up gay, inspirations and techniques, Hollywood vs. Indie and sex. Lavender Limelight offers the featured filmmakers' insight and wisdom for anyone who is the least bit interested in film.

Each director has a little tidbit of wisdom to share with the audience. The director of Paris is Burning,Jennie Livingston, think that "people who make movies should study literature and history to look at how people tell stories." In terms of artistic independence, Livingston asserts, "you can either be who you are or you can give it up. I can only be me and make the movies I make." Livingston is also keen on sexual identity: "Everything I do is about how we fit into a culture and how we negotiate identities in gender, race, class and power and hopefully maintain a spark of humanity."

Along the same lines, Monika Treut, director of Virgin machine and Seduction: The Cruel Woman, clarifies identity issues in her films. "I wanted to fight a misunderstanding that people have of S/different," Treut explains. "I wanted to show people that they are two differnt universes and they have nothing to do with each other." Treut continues, ":concepts of identity are very important in this country. People identify themselves through sexual orientation. I think we are more than just our sexual orientation."

Rose Troche, director of go Fish, makes an interesting distinction between independent films and Hollywood productions: "Indie films are director's films. In Hollywood, producers and the money people control the film. If I can't get something that I think is a reflection of what I want, I wouldn't call it a film by Rose Troche." Say no more.

The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls In Love is Maria Maggenti's homeage to teen love. In her interview, talks about her personal reasons for going to film school, and her interest in fact versus fiction. She also said, "Films are not just made by the filmmaker,s but htey are made by the audience and thier expectations."

This look at thefilmmakers provides an interesting behind-the-scenes look at production for anyone interested in filmmaking, regardless of sexual orientation.
