Critical Rating: AAA

A slice of life video, Boys Behind Bars focuses on Latino men in prison, with a sprinkling of black and Anglo actors for ethnic variety. The title song sets the mood in the opening sequence, telling of young men “too bad for work and too cool for school” as the camera captures vignettes from daily life behind bars.

The plot centers on a doctor, well-played by Ferrara, who seduces inmates during physical examinations, and the warden, poorly played by Certleman, who is determined to stop all the hanky-panky. We don’t learn how the conflict is resolved – stay tuned for Boys Behind Bars II for the final solution.

The major problem here is unevenness. At times the technical quality is excellent; at times the tape appears washed out, with poor color mix. Performances are also uneven, ranging from above average to poor. But the sex is consistently hot.
