Nice box cover.
Plots involving troubled relationships seem to provide the best uncontrived framework for she-male video features. The idea of sex experimentation outside of the relationship seems to naturally call for experiments in gender as well. But when faced with filling a full-length feature, it is the rare director who can successfully weave together the required number of varied sex scenes. Lawrence David was not fully up to this singular challenge with this otherwise excellent video.
This is not to say that David is a rank amateur. On the contrary. The video is full of imagination and erotic images. Perhaps the most memorable is the costume made of plastic food wrap and the ensuing use of various food products as sex aids. We should also credit David’s directing with the fine performance rendered by Karen Dior, formerly Karin of L.A. Video and Bizarre fame.
By all measures – cast, camerawork, editing, sound, and even the innovative “surprise” packaging – Painted would rank at the very top. It is only the breakdown of the otherwise strong storyline that is a problem. The inclusion of a mysterious gay sex scene prompts the viewer to ask, “wait a minute; who are these guys and why are they here?” Their presence is never explained, and that question nags for the rest of the feature. Put this out of your mind, and you will have a totally enjoyable 88 minutes. Definitely for stores who carry the offbeat genres.
