Featuring a cast of mostly blacks and Latinos, South Bronx Story does a nice job of capturing the feel of that neighborhood. The exterior shots give the feature of a documentary. Once inside, however, only some of this relatively unknown cast is able to act, deterring from the mood.
South Bronx Story has no actual story as such – just a compilation of street-talk clichés that link an array of sexual situations. Those erotic scenes range from good to dull, but the videography is mostly excellent. Aided by a swing score that could have served West Side Story, I feel bad that sexually, this feature doesn’t score better.
The better scenes include a black prostitute talking on two studs in an area loaded with garbage, and a bathroom oral scene where the man calls his penis “Worm Johnson.” A couple of dildo scenes in a sextoy store go on way too long, and the hot and not-so-hot scenes seem to alternate throughout the feature.
Nonetheless, credit should go to dual directors David Christopher and Janus Rainer for venturing into New York’s tougher neighborhoods to lend realism to their subject manner. It’d like to see South Bronx Story II, with better acting and sex.
