Sometimes one dopey scene can torpedo a movie. In this instance somebody sailed into a mine field. Don't take it personally, Amber, but Personal Best is not one of your best.
Case in point. Ms. Lynn as Giselle is supposed to be a famous track star. As if to keep reemphasizing that point, we have this silly concept continually supported by clunky, slow-mo running sequences. Let's give the Chariots of Fire schtick a rest already, huh?
Being fair about this, Giselle does look phenomenal in white high heels. We also have a very attractive supporting cast, particularly Tamara Longley, who is possessed of one of the great slinky bods of our decade, and Nina Hartley who lends her famous whoopie cushion eyes in a wet and lusty opening sequence.
And we get some real sweat in the sex, as the movie will appeal to lovers and other strangers. Speaking of which, we get the obligatory lady athlete-lezzie-locker-room-sucker fest when Amber takes on a couple of throaty lovers.
But do you think Giselle/Amber is happy with all this sordidness? Of course she is. So why does Mandy and her live-in lover Tony try to set Giselle "straight" in the end? Their social commentary doesn't cut it here, but neither does Giselle when she tells her lover/porn actress friend (about porn), "They'll never let you live it down. I should know."
