Of the plethora of post-Porky’s teenage sex comedies to emerge from Hollywood in the past two years, Private School… for Girls is certainly not the worst, but may very well be the most irksome, if only because of its failed potential.  But how can anything with lovely Phoebe Cates be all that bad?

From the same producers of that underrated little gem, Private Lessons, the movie tells of the lives of students at the Cherryvale School for Girls (get it?) and the Freemount Academy for Boys (get it, huh, get it?0 and their inevitable yearning for coeducational mingling.

The writers make half-hearted attempts to spoof the commercialization of sex and throw in a few in-jokes based on old movies, but the majority of the humor is aimed at a junior high mentality.  As for sex, one snooty female student wears blouses that seem to disintegrate upon contact with skin, and a beachside scene between Cates and Matthew Modine is well done and sexy.

Wasted in cameo roles are Sylvia Kristel (from Lessons) as an easily-flustered sex Ed teacher and Martin Mull as a pharmacist in the obligatory condom purchase scene.  Cates is certainly lovely to watch, and shows signs of being a good actress, but not this time.
