Reviews

Let's be up-front about this three-disc collection: The reason one buys it is for the classic lead piece, The Cheerleaders, by far the best of the cheerleader movies of the '70s, and the only one to originally have received an "X" rating from the MPAA even though neither it nor either of the other movies here is actually hardcore. It is worth noting, however, that all three movies are completely uncut from their original presentation, unlike various videotape releases we've seen of The Cheerleaders.

The Cheerleaders' plot involves virgin Stephanie Fondue, a shy but cute babe who figures she can finally get laid if she becomes a cheerleader. Trouble is, captain Denise Dillaway has a bet with her coach that she (Denise) can prevent this from happening, so as one might expect, hilarity ensues. Note also that Clair Dia, who later went on to star in XXX films, appears under another name as one of the cheerleaders.

What no plot synopsis can convey, however, is the utter innocence of the performances and action here. The girls aren't accomplished actresses, but each manages to convey more sexual energy than is found in many XXX features. The screenplay, which is firmly planted in '70s kitsch and ambiance, has more in common with Beach Blanket Bingo than, say Beach Blanket Bango (which some adult company really ought to reissue on DVD), and everything – camerawork, editing, music – combines to make this an unforgettable mainstream (well, more or less) sex comedy. For the other two movies, however, the best things about them are the audio commentaries, which, on RofC is by two ex-cheerleaders, whose banter turns out to be way funnier than the movie itself.
